Quick Setup for Extended Messaging Networks
Quick Setup for Extended Messaging Networks
Facebook Messenger is a great way of keeping in touch with family, friends, and acquaintances. It’s a free app owned by Meta, formerly Facebook Inc., that lets you send private messages to anyone in your contacts.
But how can you actually add contacts to Facebook Messenger? Can you add them on Messenger but not on Facebook? And what if they don’t even have Facebook?
How Do I Add New Contacts on Messenger?
If you have the person you want to interact with already added as a Facebook friend, you can chat to them via Messenger really easily.
Simply open the Messenger app if you’ve got it on your smartphone (or click on the service’s icon, which looks like a speech bubble with a lightning bolt inside, via Facebook on your browser).
Go to theChat interface, at the bottom left of your screen. You can then either click onSearch and see suggested recipients or click on the “compose” button, which looks like a small pen inside a square box; on smartphone apps, this is at the top-right of your screen.
Suggested contacts will appear, or you can type in a name in the “To:” field to filter that list. All applicable Facebook friends and groups will appear, so simply click on the one you want and start talking!

You might have opened Messenger and been shocked to see a list of people who you can chat to right away. That’s because Messenger automatically adds your friends from Facebook to Messenger.
So what about adding people you know from your smartphone? You might want to add all your contacts (or at least those using Facebook) to Messenger.
All you need to do is go to your profile by clicking on your photo icon at the top-left of your interface. Next, tap onPhone contacts > Upload contacts .
If you change your mind afterwards, you can do this process again to unsync the two.

How Do I Sync My Contacts From Facebook to Messenger?
You can also open Messenger and navigate toPeople . You’ll see a list of friends who are currently active. Tap the address book symbol on the top-right of your screen; this will show you the people who are in your phone contacts list and who use Facebook. Click on any of them to start chatting.
Can I Add Someone on Messenger but Not Facebook?
Close
You don’t need to add someone as a friend on Facebook in order to chat to them on Messenger.
All you have to do is go on Facebook, search for their name, and click on the profile of the person you want to chat to. Underneath their profile picture and banner, you’ll see three icons. You don’t want to click on the ellipsis, or on “Add Friend”. Instead, clickMessage . This will open up the Messenger app and let you talk to them.
Can You Add Someone on Messenger Without a Facebook Profile?
There used to be simple ways to use Messenger without being on Facebook too, chiefly through adding phone numbers. However, since Facebook’s parent company refocused itself as Meta, this option has gone.
Nonetheless, you don’t need Facebook to use Messenger —or at least, you don’t have to be active on Facebook to still use the chat function. The onus here, though, is on the person you’re trying to connect with. If you can chat to them elsewhere, you might need to guide them through joining Facebook, deactivating their account (but not deleting it!), and then connecting on Messenger.
Essentially, anyone can use Messenger as long as they have had a Facebook account at some point and haven’t deleted it. In this case, you should be able to add them as you would anyone else, i.e. via your contact list if you have them in your address book, or by clicking onMessage on their deactivated profile .
Why Can’t I Add Someone on Messenger?
This is likely because they’re simply not on Messenger! Another possibility, if you’re searching for them using their phone number, is that they’ve not added it to Facebook. Messenger can’t connect with something it doesn’t know exists.
If you haven’t done this yourself, go to your profile, then tapMobile number > Add mobile number and add your number. Facebook will text you a verification code to check it’s correct.
This has a few benefits, including resetting your password if you have trouble logging in, and receiving SMS notifications about your account.
The downside is that you’re giving away more information about yourself: Facebook uses this to “improve personalized ads”, i.e. if you buy something from a shop by clicking via Facebook, all that data is linked to you. Social media apps don’t exactly have the best reputation when it comes to looking after your privacy …
In most cases, though, Facebook should link people up without their phone numbers, so if you can’t find someone, you should just talk to them and ask if you can connect on the app. If they don’t use it, they’ll tell you. If they do, they’ll let you know the best way to connect with them.
How Do I Delete Chats From Messenger?
Let’s say you’ve got loads of chat threads open on Messenger now and want to close some. You have a few options to delete the conversations. In case you’re wondering, blocking someone won’t delete the chats on Messenger, but they won’t be able to send new messages from that account.
So how can you delete old messages on Messenger?
Open Messenger then tap and hold on the conversation thread you want to get rid of. A box will open underneath with numerous options. From here, you canMute , meaning you won’t get notifications from that person, Delete , orArchive .
You can find the latter by going on your profile photo then tappingArchived chats . This is probably the better option as these conversations won’t litter your feed, but are still just a couple of taps away.

Add Friends on Messenger With Ease
You can now keep in touch with your family and friends easily through Facebook and its associated Messenger app. Of course, there are plenty of instant messaging alternatives, but if you’re intent on sticking with Meta, you can at least make sure your chats are secure by keeping them encrypted too.
